persuader, custodian of a company's technology capability. This is the role of the IT Director.
IT Departmental Head. Depending on the scope of your IT requirements, you may need an IT Manager to act in a multi-faceted role
to be responsible for your entire IT function and to look after infrastructure, software, out-sourcing, budgets and staffing. If you are
running a significant facility you may have or need several dedicated departmental heads. Typically, on the applications side, these will be
individuals with a deep understanding of your vertical market and associated business applications, together with a
strong awareness of architectural development methods and the SDLC. Typical role titles may be: Head of Development,
Head of Architecture & Design, Head of Testing.
On the operational / infrastructure side, departmental heads will be adept at looking after large 24/7 production environments, security,
disaster recovery and data management. Typical role titles include: Operations Manager, Networks Manager,
Head of Infrastructure Support.
Programme and project assurance, Prince 2 adherence, team management, stakeholder liaison, delivery milestones, project scoping through to
UAT and implementation. Programme Managers and Project Managers come in many forms. Some have risen up from hands-on technical
delivery roles and as such as suited to the roles of Development Project Manager or Infrastructure Project Manager where a strong
understanding of items such as RUP, RAD or Iterative methods is needed or a perhaps a knowledge of ITIL or SOX compliance is necessary.
And let's not forget other equally important IT Management roles such as Change Manager, QA / Test Manager and Tools Manager.
Today's IT management roles require more than technical ability. Individuals at this level need to be able to display true business sense,
