Computer programming. So much history, so many languages. A form of art, a craft, an engineering discipline? Programming in its purest
form is a joy to behold.
Two to three decades ago it was PL1, COBOL, FORTRAN and PASCAL that took centre stage alongside some of the Assembler languages. These
languages helped deliver mainframe-based applications and introduced IT to mainstream business users.
Although these (dare we say) legacy languages are still used commercially today in some organisations, it is the object-based languages
which are used for the majority of applications today; predominantly JAVA, C#, VC++ VB / VB.net family of languages. Scripting languages
such as PHP and Perl for web-based applications are also very popular.
We know that software engineers, developers and programmers are usually very passionate about coding in their chosen discipline. We too
